Chengdu is safe

四川新闻网-成都日报讯:
  Say“No!”to“acrophobia”
“Buildings in Chengdu have stood the test of the earthquake.”
“There is no relevance between a building’s earthquake-resistance and its height.”
“Generally, considerations of seismic fortification are required in designs and construction of taller buildings.”
  Qs and As
Q: In terms of safety indices, is there any proof that living on lower floors is safer than living on higher floors?
A (Wang Cuikun, vice director of Building Structure Research Institute of China Academy of Building Research):
A high-rise building owns the same safety attributes regardless of its floor. In the aspect of pressure the high-rise bearing, the lower floors of a high-rise building bear stronger pressure. The lower floors should be strengthened to guarantee the safety of the whole building. Therefore, it is not necessary to choose lower or higher floors because of“acrophobia”. Residents can choose floors depending on their real demand.
Q: Has the earthquake affected the on-going construction of buildings?
A (Shi Weixing, director of Earthquake-Resistance Research Institute of Tongji University):
According to our investigation, many projects under construction have not been damaged severely, even cracks were not found. However, we advise that concrete casting prepared one day before the earthquake be destroyed. Generally speaking, modeling concrete casting needs two or three days and the casting made one day before the earthquake may suffer minor damage during the earthquake.
Q: Will the cracks caused by earthquake cause safety worry of the high-rise building?
A (Lu Xilin, director of Structure and Project Research Institute of Tongji University):
The national standards of seismic fortification intensity require the high-rise building to have limited amplitude of swing. Although some cracks emerge, the damage is within a limited earthquake intensity, which will not cause major damages on the core structure of the high-rise building.
“Buildings in Chengdu stand the test of 8.0 magnitude earthquake. Citizen can live in without worry,”said Jiang Chenghuan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineer and designer of The Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Jinmao Tower in Shanghai.
“A building’s capability of earthquake-resistance isn’t related with its height. The standard of buildings solidity is uniform,”Jiang said,“After the earthquake, most of the buildings in the city are still standing and undamaged as these buildings are designed in accordance with the standard of seismic fortification intensity and the project quality is guaranteed.”
Long Weiguo, vice principal of SW China Building Design Academy who experienced the Wenchuan earthquake, expressed:“Most of local high-rise buildings are shear wall structure. In term of its capability of earthquake-resistance, the shear wall structure is much better than brick-concrete structure or frame structure. As to the construction quality, either the construction team or construction material should reach a very high level.”
Local citizens fear the swaying of the high-rise building when the quake happened. Wang Cuikun explained that it is a normal phenomenon that the high-rise building sways when jolted by the earthquake.“There is a displacement scope for the high-rise building when the earthquake happened. The taller the building is, the stronger the sways are felt by people on the higher floor.”According to Wang’s analysis, the structure of the high-rise building is safe.
Lecture on house safety go in to communities
A series of lectures on house safety was kicked off at Chengdu Vanke Garden City in Jinjiang District on June 16. Hundreds of dwellers in the community participated in the lecture and discussed on earthquake and house safety with experts. Two experts, Zhu Jieshou and Yuan Zhongxiang, gave lectures on earthquake knowledge so that local citizens can have a better understanding on the city’s geological formation.
Yuan Zhongxiang, an expert on house safety assessment, detailed the situations of houses in post-disaster Chengdu.
“In fact, the buildings constructed after the 1980s in the urban area of Chengdu were all designed in accordance with seismic fortification intensity to stand earthquakes of seven degrees and above. Even when a killer earthquake happens, the buildings will not collapse.”According to Yuan, as to the buildings constructed before the 1980s or some historical building, citizens should require relative departments to give assessment and revitalization plans.
As to the cracks on the balcony, door, ceiling or stairs, a right way to use the house will not be affected by these cracks. To judge these cracks being harmful for the wall or not, a very easy way was introduced by Yuan, citizens can glue a paper to cover the crack on the wall. If the paper is split after a period, it shows that the wall was damaged. If not, it shows that the crack is just on the surface.
The lectures will go to some other local communities in following weeks and will be ended by the end of July, so that more citizens will have chance to communicate with experts to ease their worry about the safety of their houses.
